Ep 4 | Seeing with New Eyes: Rising Above Old Patterns

This conversation began with a reflection on judgment. When we do not understand ourselves, and when we are surrounded by others who do not understand themselves, judgment forms. Fear gets tapped into. And when we do not understand why someone else is doing what they do, believing what they believe, or thinking what they think, a divide arises.

In this episode, I share the metaphor of the high-rise building. Imagine we are all born on the ground floor. That is all we can see. But as we move up to the next level of understanding, we gain a new vantage point. We can see the patterns that others are still living in, and we can see where we were living, too.

I talk about the sensory processing sensitivity trait, the gift of taking in five times more stimuli, and the danger of anticipating the needs of others before they even recognize them. I share my own journey from putting everyone else before myself to realizing that meeting other people's needs was actually inhibiting their development.

If you have ever felt judged for being "too much," if you have been the one to anticipate everyone else's needs, if you are waking up to the patterns you inherited from your family, this space is for you.

What Arose in This Conversation

  • The High-Rise Building Metaphor: We are all born on the ground level of our consciousness. That is all we can see. As we evolve and move up a level, we gain a new vantage point. We can see the patterns we were living in, and the patterns others are still living in. It is not about being better; it is about seeing more.
  • The Gift of Sensory Intelligence: Highly sensitive women take in five times more stimuli in the common five senses, and even more through thirty-plus senses. This is not a malfunction. It is a finely tuned central nervous system and a unique neuroanatomy designed for deep processing and empathy.
  • Anticipating Needs vs. Meeting Needs: For years, I anticipated the needs of others before they even recognized them. I thought this was love. I learned it was actually inhibiting their development. When we meet everyone else's needs before our own, we give from a depleted state and prevent others from learning to advocate for themselves.
  • Judgment as a Lack of Understanding: Judgment arises from a lack of understanding. When we wake up and see from a higher level, we can come from compassion rather than blame. We can support others in their process without judging where they are on their path.
  • The Unexpected as a Teacher: Life works in real time. The unexpected shows up. A notification from a guest spot reminded me of a conversation about Human Design. Those sensations and surprises become our greater teachers, helping us realize what we needed to learn in that moment.
  • Gratitude as a Frequency: Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but gratitude is a daily practice. The more we tune into the frequency of gratitude, the more we draw experiences to see the good in ourselves, in others, and in the world. Your voice matters. Your feelings have value.
  • Oscillation Between Stress and Rest: Stress is not something to fear, but it is something to understand. There needs to be a healthy oscillation between stressful experiences and restful experiences. We cannot live only on the restful side, but we can learn to appreciate the clues that stress gives us.

An Invitation to Carry With You

As you listen, or as you reflect afterward, what patterns are you seeing now that you could not see from the ground floor? Where are you anticipating the needs of others before they even ask? What would it feel like to pause, connect with your breath, and let someone else meet their own need for a moment?
