Ep 5 | Softening the Story: Compassion, Sensitivity and Awakening

Today has been quite an interesting day for me personally. And what I keep coming back to is how my life's journey has been a culmination of what fascinates me, what calls me forward, and what frustration or friction I experience along the way.

In this episode, I explore the shift from "why is this happening to me" to "what is happening within me." I talk about the brick in the backpack we carry when we leave our emotions unprocessed, the mirror neurons that allow us to sense what someone else is feeling before they have the words, and the spontaneous spiritual awakening that changed everything for me seventeen years ago.

I also speak to the differential susceptibility that highly sensitive women carry. When our childhood environment was loving and supportive, it gave us a good foundation. When it wasn't, the path is harder, but it doesn't mean we can't rise up out of those early experiences. The fire of pain can be transformed into a beautiful love and desire to help others heal.

If you have ever felt like you are walking this awakening path alone, if you are the first in your family to question the old patterns, if you are ready to shift the narrative from "things are happening to me" to "things are happening within me," this conversation is for you.

What Arose in This Conversation

  • Flipping the Script: The old pattern says, "How could they do that to me?" The awakened perspective asks, "I wonder what led that person to choose that behavior. Is that their own subconscious programming repeating?" This is not about accepting harmful behavior. It is about softening into curiosity instead of hardening into judgment.
  • The Brick in the Backpack: When we go through an experience and tell ourselves we cannot deal with it now, we carry it forward. Unprocessed emotions become bricks in a backpack. The culture says leave your personal stuff at the door, but that treats us like machines. We are whole beings, mind, body, and soul.
  • Mirror Neurons and Sensory Intelligence: As highly sensitive women, we have more mirror neurons. We can sense what someone else is feeling before they may even have the words to describe it. This is not a flaw. It is a gift of sensory intelligence. But depending on our upbringing, it may not always feel like a gift.
  • Differential Susceptibility: Our childhood experiences play a big part in how the trait impacts our health and happiness. A supportive, loving environment gives us a foundation. An unsupported environment makes the path harder. But it does not mean we cannot rise up out of those early experiences.
  • The Spontaneous Awakening: Seventeen years ago, I had a non-dual awakening that revealed an eternal and abundant connection to all that is. It was not a religious experience. It opened me up to such beauty and benevolence and love and bliss that my life became about understanding what that was and how to connect with it more.
  • We Are Not Separate: We are not separate within ourselves, and we are not separate from each other. Whether we call it God, the quantum field, universal intelligence, or source, it is flowing to and through all of us. We just were not all raised in a way to tune into it.
  • The Spiral, Not the Linear Path: Awakening is not something we do once and then we are there forever. It is a spiral. We revisit the same experiences and see them from a new vantage point. Our nervous system is looking to feel safe enough to feel what is coming up. That takes practice and commitment.
  • Awakening Has No Age Requirement: I hear people say that sensitivity spikes in perimenopause or menopause. There are absolutely shifts during those seasons. But I also support women in their early twenties who are waking up out of old conditioning. This awakening is happening at every age.

An Invitation to Carry With You

As you listen, or as you reflect afterward, where are you still carrying the story that things are happening to you? What would it feel like to soften into the question: What is happening within me? What brick in your backpack is ready to be set down?
